Hello, cubicle. Hello, ice.

I went in to work today, didn't leave until 7pm, and tomorrow I'll have to do it all over again.

It sucks to have to give up my weekend, but at least the stuff we're working on is exciting and I'm working in a small team (four of us) of fun people with good ideas, not to mention good senses of humor.

To add insult to injury, our company is undergoing some huge changes and a whole slew of new people are being moved into our office from our other building across town. So they tore down all sorts of walls and threw up cubicles to fit every one in. I had to give up my sweet little office to someone higher up and assume the cubicle position. The move was yesterday, so this morning I spent some time pimping my cube, trying to make it a little more cozy and less gray. I snuck my aeron chair down from my old office and replaced it with the dorky office chair that came with my new digs, too. Hope no one notices. I love my aeron chair; it's my swingline stapler, if you will. It's kinda depressing having a cubicle after years of having offices and soft offices*, but who knows, maybe it'll be kind of fun - they've thrown all the writers and art directors together, so it could get wacky.

I walked home in the ice storm. All the trees were encased in a thick layer of glassy ice. The sidewalk was also coated with glassy ice, and because of the wind I was often slid to and fro with complete lack of control. I fell once, slid several feet due to the slant of the walkway, and then had to scoot across the ice to a chain link fence to pull myself up because the ground was too slick to find any traction with my boots. I often had to hold onto street signs and lamp posts to keep from sliding or being blown into the street. And of course I could have taken the bus but really, where's the fun in that?

My camera's battery was down so I couldn't get any photos, but it was really beautiful. Despite the rain/sleet and driving winds, the ice coating everything shimmered in the light from the street lamps and traffic lights and made everything seem kind of magical.

* My old job called them "soft offices", or "offi-cles", but I just did a google search to try to find an example and couldn't find one(?). They were similar to a cubicle but had dividers that nearly reached the ceiling and had a door that you could close for privacy.
