Windows here have secrets
Jan. 24th, 2011 09:23 pmToday I learned the secret to German windows! They open two ways – inwards from the top, AND inwards from the side!
Over the weekend I had deduced that this must be the case when I could only open my balcony door (it's basically a really big window) inwards from the top. That's because I was turning the handle 180 degrees – the secret is to stop halfway through the turn, at 90 degrees and THEN open it! I can't wait to try this on Saturday and finally have access to my balcony!
I emailed the building management and asked if they were going to install a sink and an oven, and they said yes, so that's something I won't have to deal with after all, which is nice. I can return the hotplate I bought on Saturday – it's unopened and I have the receipt. I just wonder WHEN they are going to install these things. They take the concept of a relaxed European work ethic to the max.
I can't wait to be able to cook regular meals for myself again. There's an enormous Turkish grocery store around the corner from the new place and I'm dying to go there and load my new fridge up with all sorts of good stuff. I'd like to cut out all the restaurant food...it's nice every once in a while, but every day takes the "special" out of it. I generally make my dinners for myself here with the Italians, but with four of us sharing the kitchen it gets busy.
In other news, I'm going to Zurich tomorrow! It's going to be a loooong day.
