We went out for what we thought would be an hour long walk and then found ourselves hopelessly caught up in a wave of mushroom hunting. Once you find one you can't stop - your eyes turn on their mushroom vision and you see the forest floor in a whole new way. It's like a primal Easter egg hunt. Three and a half hours later we came back with all our loot:

Last night I slept amazingly well and had fantastic dreams. It must be all the fresh forest air. Either that or the fairies and sprites are blowing magic dust in my face during the night.

I Still don't have a phone line/Internet, but am amassing an army of German friends to help me overcome the many layers of BS that this situation has become. The landlord denies responsibility, and so does the phone company. Everyone is passing the buck and pointing fingers, and here I sit without the ability to communicate with the outside world. Thank God for the kindness of neighbors and friends – they swear I will have service before the week is out.

My friend Mark was in town last week with 20 of his art students and two other chaperone/professors. I took the week off and hung with the professors the entire time, acting as something of a tour guide and guest lecturer. On Wednesday I opened up my studio to the students and gave a talk about my art and what it's like to be a professional in the arts. They were duly impressed not only by the art and my studio, but also the fact that I have such a polite, personable pigeon as a house pet. Rasputin pranced around and coo'ed for them, hamming it up and displaying his plumage. The students took photos of everything as if my entire home was an exhibition. I suppose I would have too back when I was 18 years old. The place has definitely become 'Sarah-ified'... Not an easy feat to accomplish in the few months since I moved in, but I've been out at the flea markets every Sunday since March 1st, dragging home furniture and household items...lampshades, old chairs, post war textiles – Christ, you name it – trying my damnedest to get the place to be a HOME. I even bought myself a real BED, which, omg is the first real bed I've had in years. Sleeping on the couch just wasn't cutting it any more.

One of the teachers – the design teacher – stayed behind when the others left to head back to Lichtenstein. Teaching design is just something he does for fun. He also runs a design firm based in both Austria and London, doing the kind of work most designers only dream of doing – art books, transit maps, museum literature, etc. He bought me a coffee and asked me if I'd consider working with them when my 2 year work visa ends (which will free me to change jobs if I want). I'll have to talk to my lawyer to find out what my options are, but Hell Yeah I would like to jump on this opportunity. I'm going to visit their Austrian office for a few days in January to talk further and meet the rest of the team. If this all goes down I would still live and work at home in Berlin but would occasionally fly to Austria to work on-site or present work to clients. Exciting stuff.

Ive been without Internet for almost 3 months now. Finally a service guy came out here yesterday to see what the problem is and it turns out that the phoneline runs perfectly fine to the cellar but there is no connection from there to my apartment. Until a Cable connects my hookups to the ones in the cellar i wont Be able to get online. The Hausmeister is of course on vacation, so it will Be a couple of weeks Until anything can Be done. BTW my Phone has becomr germanized somewhere along the line and now all the Auto typing turne into German. So please forgive the Crazy capitaliting and germanization. Ive been trying to Hack into my neighbors wifi but its Slow going. I can only Collect Information about their Network when they are online and it appears that they don't use the Internet so much. Another neighbor - also without Internet but Not because of line Problems like me - told me there was a Fire in my Apartment and that it had to Be massively Rennovated before anyone could Move in. I Wonder if thats when the Lines between here and the cellar were ruined. In anycase, hopefully it wohnt Be Long bevor im up and Running again.

I'm back in the states, visiting my folks for the first time in almost a year and a half.

Everything seems smaller to me for some reason. I thought my old bedroom was much bigger than this, but it looks like a shoe box to me now. The bathtub looks half the size I remember it as. Even my parents seem smaller, if that's possible. Maybe I got bigger? Or maybe I'm just severely jet lagged and having distorted perceptions. My brain is also getting tripped up on having to go full-on English, which is something I didn't expect – words like danke, entschuldigung and tschüss have become my new defaults and I have to stop and think before I talk.

I'm going to sleep sooooo well tonight.

Creepy German billboard as seen this morning as I went to work. It was advertising free credit for a number of months at some big retail store or another - I forget which.

Still trying to determine if it was maybe supposed to look creepy? In an ironic advertising-y kind of way? I dunno O_o

This is something I've been working on since moving to my new place. I got a Dremel tool yesterday after work, and over the weekend I'm planning to engrave an image into the surface. The top coat of paint is still tacky, so if that doesn't dry I'll have to hold off until later, but I'm excited to play with my new Dremel toy, so my fingers are crossed it dries in time.

The moving guys are here loading my stuff into their truck. I was up all night packing things up - 12 hours of intense, concentrated effort. I grossly underestimated the amount of things I have, or at least the amount of time it would take to pack them.

It's kind of awkward sitting here on my ass doing nothing while these three guys are killing themselves getting my sofa down the stairs.

I drank big cups of strong tea as I worked through the night and I'm still shaky, but I feel like I could crash at any moment and sleep for two days straight.

I captured Rasputin without too much trouble - I threw a blanket over her and she froze. I felt horrible doing it because she was just starting to get comfortable around me, and I feel like I have betrayed her trust.

I feel really stressed out. I suppose that's normal given that moving is one of the most stressful events in a person's life.

Its 5:27am and I'm off to Zürich again today.

My life has somehow become all about work lately. Part of it is because we're super-busy working on Christmas layouts and this is a busy time of year for everyone in the ad world, but part of it is because I'm angling for a raise. A BIG raise. And before I go and ask for it I want to really show how awesome and indispensable I am. At my last job When I asked for a Big Raise they gave me a 12% increase - I'm going to see if I can do better than that. So yeah, my life is pretty focused on work right now.

Other than that I'm planning on moving to a new apartment and better part of town in January so I've been looking through the listings to get a feel for what's out there. I've got a much better grasp of the city and language than I did last year, so hopefully I'll have better luck this time around. I'm so sick of living in the ghetto.

Finally back in Berlin after a long day in Paris. The meeting was 4 hours long, but I got to see some of the sights before and after. Beautiful city.

I'm in a taxi heading home now. I've been up for 20 hours straight and can't wait to finally get some sleeeeeep.

I'm on my way to the Gravis store, which is the certified Apple dealer here in Berlin. I've moved the appropriate funds into my German bank account from my US account, and I know exactly what I want. It really sucks having to gouge my dwindling US savings for this, but I'm sick of not being able to communicate easily with people, sick of every song on my iPod, and want to move forward with computer related art projects. I made it a whole month and a half without one, though. Not bad.

I had hoped to be able to save more Euros over the past couple of months, but was cleared out by the Sclüsseldienst last week - 300 euros. I have a mild panic attack every time I close my door when leaving my apartment now, sure that it's going to cost 200 euros to be let back in.

I just read about how LJ has been down due to a DDOS, basically an attack on the server, apparently originating in Russia. The article suggested that LJ users copy important entries onto their hard drive. As someone with a lifetime account, I really don't appreciate this. I've been posting here since 2002 and trying to pick out and save the 'important' entries would be nearly impossible at this point. Not to mention the fact that I don't have a hard drive to save them to right now. Frustrating. And I don't know where I would set up a new blog, either. I like LJ's format and it feels like home. For now I plan to stick around, but I'm going to research other options just in case this ship really does sink.

After getting locked out of my apartment twice within the impossibly stupid time span of three hours*, I did some work on the painting. Specifically, the collars on the figures.

It's coming along.

*I am now afraid to leave my apartment for fear that I'll have to call the Schlüsseldienst again. I put him on speed dial just in case.

I've just locked myself out of my apartment twice in the same day. Twice in the same _morning_, actually.

I guess it's just not my day.

Salzburg was fabulous, and it was so good to see my friend D. On our last day together we went to see an amazing art exhibit and then hiked up one of the many mountains. The view was amazing, and we drank a couple beers when we reached the top. I was sad when we had to part ways, especially the next morning when I knew she had left on her early morning flight and I was on my own again.

My flight was at 7:20pm so I spent the day hiking around ruins of the old city wall up along the mountainside.

I also paid a visit to the Mozart Museum, which was in the building where he was born. It was a total tourist trap, and probably not worth the 7 Euros I paid to get in. There were some strands of hair that might have been his, furniture that was like the furniture he probably had, and then lots of stage drawings from productions of his operas, all from the 1800's. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Plus there were large packs of bored, uninterested children with parents who had dragged them along.

Today I got a pair of pricey running shoes and some exercise/sweat pants. I thought it might be a good idea to give running a try; I walk a lot, but I almost never break a sweat or get my heart rate up. So I went out for a jog around 5pm this afternoon, but after only 10 minutes I decided to abort the mission. I had taken my entire ring of house keys with me and when I started running they made me sound like Santa's entire troupe of reindeer. On top of that it was rush hour so there were tons of people out, and I felt like everyone was craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the reindeer. Which made me feel really weird and self conscious, especially because I was gasping for air like someone who never breaks a sweat or gets their heart rate up.

I'll try again tomorrow morning without all the extra keys...

Holy multiple posts, Batman!

I don't remember the last time I made three posts in a single day, but I just have to share this:

The sun sets 58 minutes later here than it did in Chicago. (!!!)

All summer long I've been feeling like I've been going insane because I couldn't tell what time it was. In my mind, the sun should only stay up until 9pm, and then there should be night. But here? It'll be 10pm and it will still be light out... No wonder my inner clock's been all messed up. It helps to explain all the all night partying that goes on here, or at least MY all night partying, lol

Has anyone here seen 'Rammbock: Berlin Undead'? I just saw it available to rent on iTunes and it looks kind of awesome, plus it takes place here in Berlin and well, you know, I kind of think it must be awesome just because of that but wanted to ask anyway...

Zombies! In Berlin! Yeah... I think I've seen some on the U-Bahn from time to time...
