Resurfacing
Feb. 27th, 2011 07:19 pmI finally have internet access!
I still haven't been able to set up the router, but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough. I'm just glad to be back "in touch".
(Side note – wow, it's hard to type on an American keyboard now that I'm so used to using a German one at work. If you spot z's and y's out of place, that's whz.)
I'm still working on fixing up my apartment, painting walls, repairing things, and of course getting drunk out of my mind on the weekends. Or at least LAST weekend I was drunk out of my mind. I went out for "a" beer with my friend Alison after work on Friday night and we ended up at 3am in a crazy dive bar on the East side of town drinking Absinthe, complete with sugar cube, funny spoon and flames. It was totally great. The next day was dedicated to re-hydration, but I have no regrets.
This weekend has been dedicated to finishing the paint job in my living room, which I did yesterday, and then I was going to go to IKEA today to get more furniture, but they were closed. I guess the Sunday that I was there was a special "OMG We're Actually Open Today" Sunday. Or something. I'm still kind of figuring things out here.
But my place is coming together nevertheless. The kitchen is completely finished, and the living room is quickly getting there.
It's fun for me to see the before and after pictures side by side because it reminds me of how much I've accomplished since I moved in, despite feeling like I'm never going to get this place in order.
Kitchen before:

And how it looks now:

And then of course there was the fabulous Mural Room:

Which now looks like this:

The black chandelier looks great, but I still need to have it wired...

So now I just need to get some furniture. It's basically all going to come from IKEA because that's the only place I know that has transport waiting outside the door. Plus it's inexpensive and generally OK stuff. (The little stool in the photo above came from the Mauer Park Fleamarket, and I was able to carry it home on the train. I think a sofa would be a little much.)
---
I am so impressed by the weather here. To me this "winter" is the mildest I've ever known in my entire life. It felt like spring here today.
---
Having my own washing machine is seriously awesome. Doing laundry has become a fluid part of my everyday life, rather than a huge chore that I dread having to do. It's really amazing, and as an added bonus, the radiators here double as very nice dryers.
