Surrounded!

This afternoon I left work at 3:00 due to an upset stomach - I think it was the broccoli in my salad that did me in. I don't have a problem with cooked broccoli but the raw stuff can sometimes make me sick. When I was a kid it was much worse, and even cooked broccoli would make me sick. My mother didn't believe me at ALL - she thought I was just making it up because I didn't like how it tasted - and she would force me to eat it.
So I left work and walked through Lincoln Park on my way home. Breathing the cool damp air made me feel better, and because the zoo doesn't close until 5pm I took a little detour and visited some animals. I saw the polar bear in his big pool and the birds of prey perched up on their branches. The storks were graceful. All of the animals were subdued and quietly enduring the steady downpour. I was lucky to have my umbrella with me, and walked slowly through the zoo, making my way north towards my lagoon.
I had purchased some day old bread, and when I got to my lagoon I brought it out of my bag to feed the ducks. I was happy there in the rain feeding the ducks, and the ducks seemed happy, too.
Then, across the pond I saw them coming; a giant brigade of Canadian geese cruising across the water towards me and my day old bread.
The geese bullied the little ducks aside and came up out of the water, surrounding me and coming up close. I fed them pieces of the bread, trying to throw it several feet from me to get them to back off a little, but they did not. They knew I was holding the bread and they weren't about to move. They looked up at me with their intelligent black eyes and long pink tongues, and I suddenly felt trapped by them. Their heads came up to my waist and I held my hands up for fear that they would snap at my hands. I was surrounded by about forty of them, totally outnumbered.
I warily made my way through the crowd of hungry, beady-eyed birds and walked away from them on the path. They followed after me, but I quickened my pace (that is, I ran). I walked home, looking over my shoulder often to be sure that the giant gang of geese was not still following after me.
Never a dull moment at my lagoon.
Tonight I am not hungry. I had a small bowl of cut fruit, but didn't really touch my noodles or sausage - my stomach still feels off. I'm hoping I'll be back to normal tomorrow.
