I spoke with a gramophone repair man this morning over the phone. He told me that even reproduction gramophones use antique machines, so the spring that I have is at least 80 years old. A new one will be $40, and the installation will be $30. I'll have to ship the machine to him and the backlog is about a 4 week wait. If I can't find anyone here in Chicago who can fix it, I guess I'll send it out to him.

Having done some investigation, there's no way I would attempt to install a new spring myself. It's a pretty dangerous thing to do without the right tools and know-how because even a broken spring still has a lot of stored energy in it. And it would be just my luck, too. Death by gramophone spring.
